When the folks at the Golden Nugget Atlantic City announced an ’emergency jobs fair’ to fill some newly created customer solution spots, they might have hardly likely to be greeted by a cast of over a thousand task seekers lining up around the block. And yet the casino opened its doors this week to a large number of hopefuls vying to fill simply 50 positions; sadly, the potential employees were facing the worst chances into the casino.
Atlantic Club Employees Turn Out in Droves
Many of the out-of-work were former workers at the Atlantic Club, which filed for bankruptcy in November 2013 after failing to vie against the newer and larger casinos of Atlantic City. The Atlantic Club was sold in December for $23.4 million, become stripped for components, after a deal that is last-minute PokerStars.com fell through due to issues over the outstanding indictment on the company’s creator Isai Scheinberg. Some 1,600 people lost their jobs whenever it finally shut its doors on January 13th of the year; some had been utilizing the casino since its inception.
Golden Nugget general supervisor Tom Pohlman said the casino’s burgeoning business was in part due to the closure of this Atlantic that is unfortunate Club. The Golden Nugget is comparable in size, and many associated with the Atlantic’s former customers now frequent the Nugget. Pohlman confirmed that a few thousand previous Atlantic customers now have players’ club cards at his casino.
‘It’s essential to us to maintain a certain standard of consumer service, and we have to bring in help that is immediate’ he said. ‘It’s unfortunate to see exactly how people that are many right here because this means many people in Atlantic City are out of employment. But you will find great candidates here, and we can find the most useful of the greatest.’
Difficult to find Work
Pat Van Woeart one of many hopefuls worked in a coffee store at the Atlantic Club and has now been out of work since it had been turn off.’It’s been terrible’ she said. ‘I’ve applied everywhere that may take applications, but nobody is hiring. With food prices going up, even milk is more costly. It has been really tough. These are all dedicated people so we’re not used to being out of a task. My wellness benefits are expiring. I require a job and I require it now.’
Ronnie Martinez is a security that is former at the Atlantic Club. He said: ‘It’s been tough feeding my loved ones. I really hope We get employed here. I’ve a great work record.’
Although the casino initially advertised 50 work over the two-day reasonable, Pohlman stated it would try to add 100 more, and this week’s unsuccessful candidates will be considered for high-season summer time work. Employment manager Tina Smith said security and housekeeping divisions were hiring at that moment, while dealers were being evaluated over the two-days, with choices made later.
The good news, however, is that there are signs of the recession abating in brand New Jersey. The state’s unemployment rate ended up being 7.3 percent in December that is down from 9.6 per cent from a year earlier in the day, although there’s still some way to go to reach pre-recession degrees of 4.6 percent. By comparison, the rate was 6.6 percent nationally, 7.1 percent in New York and 6.9 percent in Pennsylvania december.
Gaming Consultants and the Casino Business Too Inbred, Critics Claim
MGM Resorts CEO Jim Murren (shown right here, blue tie-left, at the nevada opening of CityCenter’s Aria Casino during 2009) says the casino industry is by nature a close-knit one, but some critics state it’s too inbred to control itself (Image: Ethan Miller/Getty Images North America)
Opponents of gambling into the U.S. are becoming critical of the way in which that some state that is new are employing consultants whom they say have hidden agendas and are often employed by pro-gambling lobbies.
Too Close for Convenience
Cash-strapped states are turning to industry consultants to advise them about whether to legalize gambling in an effort to bolster their coffers. These companies will often draft legislation, set up commissions making decisions about which operators might be licensees that are suitable.
But many of these specialists’ industry connections are only a little too close towards the casino company for the comfort of the anti-gambling brigade, which has announced that personal organizations that are hired to vet operators should not have a ‘cozy relationship’ with the casinos they are supposed to be scrutinizing, nor should they be acting as gambling industry regulators.
This week, the issue had been brought to light in the event of law consulting firm Shefsky & Froelich (which recently became section of Taft) hired by Massachusetts to help the state decide who should build its first casino in Springfield. Shefsky & Froelich recommended MGM Resorts International, for which it had been already being employed as a lobbyist that is registered Illinois.
It’s believed that at least 16 states across the U.S. depend on private companies as consultants. So, could it be that these states, buying a fix that is quick and desperate getting their new casinos ready to go as soon as possible, are going towards a questionnaire of semi-privatization of gambling? It is certainly not the real way things are done in states in which gambling is more established, such as Nevada, nj and Delaware, where regulation is famously stringent.
That being said, Massachusetts regulators still relatively new to the land casino game have been, if anything, roundly criticized by industry professionals as being way too nitpicky and stringent, rather than the opposite; taking away some credence from anti-gaming experts’ arguments.
Whom’s Watching Who?
Illinois Gaming Board spokesman Gene O’Shea recently measured into the debate, saying: ‘How do you vet your consultants? In case a great deal of these consultants, at once or another, have worked for individuals that you are in charge of regulating, at some time, you will have issues using the purity of the investigation.’
Meanwhile, spokesman for the Florida non-profit company No Casinos, John Sowinski, attacked the practice within the state of Florida, which will be currently wanting to expand its casino offerings beyond tribal gaming and race, saying: ‘The gambling industry could be the one industry that appears to break free using this conflict of great interest carte blanche.’
Handling director of Spectrum Gaming Michael Pollock who represents one of the biggest gambling consultant firms in the U.S., which recently completed a report for Florida negated the claims, but, saying, ‘You can’t be in this business if you should be willing to entertain conflicts of interest or also a look of the conflict.
‘We make it clear from the outset you what you want to hear, we’re going to tell you what you need to know that we are not necessarily going to tell. And we’ll not entertain an engagement when a customer seeks a particular result,’ Pollock added.
MGM CEO Jim Murren says the allegations are based on an outsider’s misconception of the gambling industry, which he states is close-knit:
‘This is not an industry that is huge and gaming law is very specialized,’ he said. ‘ There are merely maybe 4 or 5 firms that are experts in gaming law, so we understand them all, and we’ve most likely utilized them all.’
It seems that the casino consulting business is somewhat incestuous, but whether that’s simply the nature of the something or industry more sinister, is up for debate according to your views. What’s clear, nonetheless, is so it’s big company. Spectrum Gaming started life in a brand new Jersey cellar back in 1996 and has since been called one of many fastest-growing companies that are private the U.S. Its website declares that: ‘Governments, gaming operators, designers and investors in five continents have retained Spectrum, and now we stay prepared to serve clients through our offices in Atlantic City, Bangkok, Guangzhou, Hong Kong, Las Vegas, Macau, Manila and Tokyo.’
Second Philadelphia Casino Applicants Battle It Out in Pennsylvania
Philadelphia’s Sugarhouse Casino might have some competition if state regulators decide to grant a 2nd city casino permit (Image: G. WIDMAN FOR VISIT PHILADELPHIA™)
Five casinos are arguing that they’re the fit that is right Philadelphia. One casino is saying that the city doesn’t need another gambling hall at all. And still others state they wish there clearly wasn’t any casino gambling within the town to begin with.
State Your Situation
Those were the arguments heard at a Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board meeting in Harrisburg week that is last as five candidates had been allowed a quarter-hour each to make their pitch to start a second casino in Philadelphia. They were joined by the SugarHouse Casino, which opposes a second casino joining their operation which includes currently been active in the city, as well as a community group that doesn’t would like a new casino in their backyard.
The five gambling enterprises which have been proposed would differ in size and location. Market8 could be a project that is compact up just two acres in Center City. an option that is second Center City would end up being the Provence on North wide Street. Additionally, there are three South Philadelphia proposals: a large, sprawling complex known as Casino Revolution is one, while Hollywood Casino Philadelphia and Live! Hotel & Casino are additionally proposing projects into the exact same area.
At the moment, the Legislative Budget and Finance Committee is studying ‘the current condition and future viability of video gaming’ in Pennsylvania. The theory is that, that research could recommend eliminating the mandate that is current state video gaming law that claims there ‘shall be’ two gambling enterprises in Philadelphia.
Nonetheless, lawyers for SugarHouse said that the state should still wait to be sure before thinking of granting a license that is second.
‘ What you are asked by me doing is, remain your hand,’ said SugarHouse attorney John Donnelly. ‘I ask you to attend, at the bare bones, until the legislature completes its research.’
Financing A Major Issue
Of the five applicants, three made closing arguments at the meeting (Live! Philadelphia and Greenwood Gaming declined to complete so). Those arguments largely came as being a rebuttal to SugarHouse’s claims that added competition would damage their business and that there weren’t enough gamblers to guide a second casino. But some casinos also had time and energy to tout just what made their proposals that are particular.
‘The fact that we have the certainty of our funding, the truth that we are probably the most experienced designer and operator of casinos, the fact that we know this market, the fact that we have a national database that will straight away populate our gaming base here,’ said Karen Bailey of Pennsylvania Gaming Ventures, rattling from the reasons why she felt their Hollywood Casino was the most useful deal for the state.
Issues of financing are critical to state officials. In 2010, Pennsylvania took a license for a 2nd casino in the players paradise slots city far from Foxwoods simply because they failed to secure the money to construct their facility. Now, casinos have been emphasizing the security of their financing that is own to point where most industry specialists don’t believe it’ll be a problem regardless of who is ultimately selected.
That assumes that someone shall be chosen when the board makes its decision. It’s possible for the board that is seven-member pick none of the casino discounts, as being a project must be approved by all four legislative appointees and at least one of the governor’s appointees in order to receive the license.
