Italy is one of the most popular holiday destinations for Germans – but also one of the European countries that have been and are hardest hit by the corona virus.
But there is light on the travel horizon: since June 3, entry into Italy has been permitted again. For many years, Lake Garda has been one of the most popular holiday destinations for Germans. So it is hardly surprising that the authorities there are beating the drum.
"We only had one corona case here"
"Visitors can feel absolutely safe here. We only had one corona case here" says, for example, the mayor of Limone sul Garda, Antonio Martinelli. "Our place is immune." Hotels, attractions and ferries would now gradually start operating. Holidaymakers do not have to lie on the beach with respiratory masks or sit in restaurants, but a safety distance also applies when on holiday.
70 percent of vacationers from Germany
Limone sul Garda is particularly popular with foreign tourists, around 70 percent come from Germany, said Martinelli. Last year, the small town had a total of 1.3 million overnight stays – only the metropolis of Milan had more in the Lombardy region. "We want to send a message to our beloved German friends that we longingly await them."

The season usually runs from March to October, until now it has completely fallen into the water because of Corona, says Martinelli. "But we hope to bring something back in now." A particularly large number of visitors come from Bavaria to the northern Italian lake, which is located in the regions of Veneto and Lombardy and the province of Trentino.
